90. Visit Bentsen RGV State Park

Editor's Note: This is the tenth installment in a series entitled, "Top 100 Things to do in the South Padre Island/ Brownsville Area," a series that allows the visitor to get the full experience of the region.

90. Visit the Bentsen-RGV State Park.

Mission, Texas is known for its many stately palm trees but not one of the residents of that town that I asked for directions was able to help me because no one knew of this park and its majestic hidden trees deep in its woods. I hadn't been there for many years and was amazed at the improvements. The beauty that you will see so close with your own eyes makes the drive definitely worth it. You will be amazed at the sheer number of butterflies in the gardens.

This hidden gem is found at the end of S. Bentsen Palm Drive, beautifully lined by tall palms.

There were butterflies flitting everywhere.

This is the headquarters for the World Birding Center.
Places to wait quietly for a rare glimpse of a magnificent
bird have been set up for you.

There are biking trails and walking trails.

In the gift shop, there is even a coffee bar with tables inside or outside in the patio area with all the butterflies flitting about.

The only motorized vehicle allowed in the park that you can be on is a tram.
